Telegram privacy settings to check before meeting new people

Start with phone-number visibility

Telegram provides controls for phone-number visibility. Look in your app’s Privacy and Security settings and review the options currently available for your number. Read any exceptions as well: an exception can change who sees information even when the general setting looks restrictive.

Do not equate hiding a field with becoming anonymous. A person may already know your number from another source, and your chosen photo or username may connect your profile to other public accounts. Decide which connections you are comfortable making before you join an unfamiliar group.

Look at your profile as a newcomer would

Review the information you have chosen to publish: your display name, photo and biography. Ask whether each detail helps with the communities you want to join or reveals more than you intend. You can give people a useful introduction without naming your workplace, neighborhood or daily routine.

Where your app offers visibility controls for profile information or activity, read their descriptions and exceptions. The aim is an intentional profile, not a claim of perfect privacy. Once you send information to someone, their ability to copy or remember it is a separate concern from your profile settings.

• Remove details that you do not want new contacts to know.
• Check whether a photo is also used on a more personal account.
• Avoid publishing your routine or live whereabouts.
• Review settings again when your circumstances change.

Protect access to the account itself

Privacy and account security solve different problems. Telegram offers two-step verification and a view of active sessions. Follow the current in-app setup instructions for additional protection, keep recovery details accessible to you and review devices you no longer use.

Never send a login code or account password to a creator, moderator or supposed support representative in a chat. If someone says they need your code to admit you to a community, stop. Open the official app yourself rather than continuing through an unexpected login link.

Decide what a new contact really needs to know

A friendly conversation does not usually require your home address, identity documents or a photo of your payment card. Share information only when you understand its purpose and are comfortable with the recipient. Do not let urgency or the promise of special access rush that decision.

For a creator account, read the public description and terms before committing to an offer. For a group, learn how moderators communicate so you can recognize an unexpected request. A directory listing or a convincing profile picture cannot substitute for these checks.

Have an exit plan for uncomfortable conversations

You can stop an exchange without arguing about it. If a message becomes threatening, manipulative or persistently unwanted, use the reporting or blocking options available in your app. Keep any information you need for a report without continuing a conversation just to obtain more evidence.

If you suspect someone else has accessed your account, use Telegram’s current account-security guidance and review active sessions. If money or another service is involved, contact that service through an independently verified channel. These are general precautions, not a promise that a particular control will solve every incident.
